Please see details below re Relate’s new Parenting Troubled Teenagers service, which was launched 30 July 2013.

This is a Department for Education funded project providing support to parents to help them build stronger relationships with their children and help prevent teenagers ending up in care. This may be a useful resource for those families that do not fit the Troubled Families remit.

Relate has developed a dedicated online service for parents of teenagers who are concerned about their teenagers getting into serious trouble.
The free online service aims to provide mums and dads with the tools to understand current social issues and pressures that teenagers face every day which can lead them into trouble. Our new resource provides a platform for parents to talk things through discreetly and find ways to communicate with their teenager to strengthen their relationships and prevent poor outcomes.
The service aims to provide parents with:

Information and guidance on a range of issues that teenagers experience

Live-chat with a qualified counsellor

Online forum – opportunity to talk to others experiencing similar issues

Family mapping tool

The Family Project is a 8 weeks programme for young people aged 11-19 (up to 25 with additional needs) and their families. This project would provide the opportunity for parents and carers to spend quality time with their children participating in activities and positive family learning environments. The 8 weeks programme will consist of 3 hours sessions, which will incorporate a range of activities such as healthy cooking sessions, music and singing sessions, family photo diaries and family tree, sports and fitness activities team building games and problem solving activities. in additional to activities each week a one hour family group work session will take place, which will provide family the opportunity to learn new technique and solutions to resolving issues like conflict, boundary setting, behaviour modification and reward systems.

At the end of programme there would be a celebration event, in which families and young people will be awarded certifications of achievement.
